City Council of Nairobi and The Joint Venture Team -
Implementation Of An Automated Geographic Information System for
the Nairobi City Sanitation Sewer And Drainage Masterplan Study.
This project involved the digitising of 1:50000, 1:20000 and 1:10000 maps of
Nairobi and the surrounding areas, as well as the design and the implementation
of an automated GIS system to assist the engineers in carrying out the designs
and preparing reports.
The project also involved the acquisition of panchromatic SPOT satellite images
covering the city and the surrounding areas in order to update both the
infrastructure maps and the land use maps. Extensive ground truthing was also
carried out in order to translate the SPOT images.
The final products include several large maps of the city and surroundings
showing amongst other things:
- All classified roads
- Rivers
- Administration boundaries
- Names classification and location of all residential areas
- Current and predicted future land use including industrial, commercial,
residential, parks, forests etc.
- Location and classification of all trunk sewers and treatment works
- Population distribution
- Planned zoning
- Type and distribution of sanitary facilities
- Location and type of all major institutions including hospitals, schools,
colleges etc.
- Projected population distribution and growth up to the year 2020
The project also involved a large element of training for both the technicians
who assisted in digitising the maps and the engineers who were to use the
final product.
